What is Fortress?
Fortress is the church plant mission in the Killeen/Harker Heights community through a partnership between the congregations of Grace Lutheran in Killeen and St. Paul Lutheran in The Grove, Texas. Shepherded by Pastor Gerry Harrow, Fortress seeks to provide a place of refuge in God's strength for people who are connected through fellowship, the study of Scriptural truths, encouragement in life, and eventually Christian worship.
July, 2017 Newsletter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We can’t thank you enough for the generous support you’ve given to Fortress. Your prayers and financial gifts are greatly appreciated and are a constant source of encouragement for all who are a part of this mission work!
Since the June update, significant progress has been made in numerous areas. Our major focus is gathering people together and building relationships. We have held two large community gatherings with more than 40 people at each one. People from all backgrounds, ages and stations in life came together for great food, laughter and time spent together. We look forward to our next gathering scheduled for August 19. There are approximately 60 people who have indicated interest in worshipping at Fortress.
We’ve also found a place to meet. Through one of the leadership team’s connections, we’ve been able to work with Liberty Hill Middle School to secure the cafeteria as a place to meet and start worshipping this fall. Our plan is to start meeting weekly as a community on Saturday nights beginning in September. During these times, we will be studying God’s Word and starting some aspects of worship. An official public worship launch date hasn’t been set but our hope is possibly the weekend of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
As I’m writing this, we are preparing for a Neighborhood Bible Camp for Saturday, July 29. The team walked the neighborhood and met many of the people in this community. Our prayer is that we can reach some of the families through this ministry.
The possible purchase of the property is progressing with a sales contract being sent to the owners the last week in July. The volunteer architect with Laborers for Christ reviewed the property and our vision for it and indicated he thought it would work well. So, our prayer continues to be that God would give us wisdom and discernment as we cautiously move forward!
Church planters in the Texas District are encouraged to raise $10,000 per year as a part of their support. After setting up electronic giving and other avenues for support, we sent out the first round of fundraising letters. We were led to ask for $60,000 per year in support due to the great need we’ve seen here in Central Texas.
Please pray for the following:
I’d like to leave you with an encouraging word from God out of Psalm 62.
Psalm 62:5-8 ESV For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
Joy and peace,
