What is Fortress?
Fortress is the church plant mission in the Killeen/Harker Heights community through a partnership with the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran in The Grove, Texas, and financially supported by Grace Lutheran and other congregations of Circuit 17. Shepherded by Pastor Gerry Harrow, Fortress seeks to provide a place of refuge in God's strength for people who are connected through fellowship, the study of Scriptural truths, encouragement in life, and eventually Christian worship.
June, 2018 Newsletter
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Greetings from Fortress! Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and generous financial support! Your generosity is making significant Kingdom impact here at Fortress.
In the following update, you’ll see an ongoing theme at Fortress… patience and waiting on the Lord! There has been significant progress but we are continually being reminded that God’s timing and plans are the best! The leadership team has been encouraged by Proverbs 19:21 (ESV) Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Our prayer and hope is for wisdom, discernment, and patience to be in God’s will and follow his purposes faithfully!
In anticipation of being able to use the property, we officially began our lease. Since then, we have had multiple work days and the building and property are starting to take shape. Over 30 people from Fortress and local churches have given their time and talents and we thank God for their faithfulness! The re-platting and re-zoning process has also begun. We have gotten clarity from the city that we need architectural drawings (more than what we anticipated) to move forward with the required upgrades. We have scheduled meetings with 3 firms to get those done and have found a contractor to complete the work when the city gives us the permits. Our initial hope was to start using the property as soon as May but because of permitting, that will not occur. The timing is now up in the air. We have also submitted our draft Constitution and Bylaws to the district.
Based on the unforeseen delay, we have stepped back, prayed about it, and are convinced that this is a time to refocus our efforts towards building additional and deeper relationships and community with the people who have expressed interest in Fortress, with LCMS Lutherans in the area who have stopped attending, and with our neighbors. Your prayers are greatly appreciated concerning all of this!
We continue to worship 20+ people on Saturday nights at our house and have a Missional Community gathering on Wednesdays. God is transforming many who are a part of Fortress.
I am moving forward in the application to receive a Distinctive Religious Group Leader (DRGL) designation on Fort Hood. Even though it’s taken longer than anticipated, our goal is to have this in place before the current LCMS Chaplain moves this summer.
Please pray for the following:
Thank you again for your support! Let us all take Psalm 27 to heart...
Psalm 27:14 (ESV) Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
Joy and peace,
