The “Believe & Live” series is designed to bring together the truths of God’s Word as revealed during the Divine Service and the vocations we live out in the world so that those who participate may be guided to live a life guided by God – a life of joy and hope in the salvation of Christ and of service to one another. Thus, the services of this series will focus on the study of a particular truth of God’s Word and a set of prayers which are informed by that truth.
The prayers within the Divine Service will be modeled after Luther’s practice of saying a four-petition prayer based on what is being studied. The first prayer is called the “Prayer of Affirmation” and is meant to reaffirm what has been received. The second prayer, the “Prayer of Thanksgiving,” is designed to give thanks to God for His blessings which have come to us through a particular teaching. The “Prayer of Confession” follows as an expression of our contrition because of our sinful neglect of the truth. The final petition, the “Prayer of Supplication,” seeks the Spirit’s guidance and blessing in living out the truth in our vocational lives. The readings, hymns and sermon of the service all lead up to this four-fold prayer.
